Miguel Says Nobody Told Him He Couldn't Jump During His Billboard Performance

When R&B singer Miguel jumped across the crowd during the performance of his hit song "Adorn" at the Billboard Music Awards last month in Las Vegas, a collective gasp was heard from living rooms across the country. And now he's defending himself against accusations that he was warned by producers not to attempt the athletic feat.

"The reports claiming that Miguel was warned by producers not to jump are completely false," Miguel's personal publicist said in a statement sent out Wednesday. "A number of attempts were made to reach Khyati and her lawyer after the performance to see how she was doing and whether any assistance could be offered. Khyati’s wellbeing (sic) has been and continues to be of the utmost concern to Miguel."

This statement came in response to a claim Tuesday by TMZ that Miguel had, in fact, been warned before rehearsals that the jump was too dangerous to perform.

"Khyati" is Khyati Shah, one of the audience members who got caught in the crossfire when Miguel miscalculated the distance across the heads of spectators while making the leap from one platform to another, crashing into what appears to be at least three fans. TMZ has reported that Khyati is may have suffered neurological damage and is considering a lawsuit.

Yahoo! Music has left several messages for Khyati's lawyer, Vip Bhola, who has not replied. Yahoo! Music has also reached out to representatives for the Billboard Music Awards.

The crash was one of the buzziest moments of the entire awards show, instantly inspiring memes across the Internet. If you watch the jump again in slow motion, Khyati appears to be one of two women whose heads were slammed against the stage when the stunt went awry.

"Got caught up in the moment, thank goodness Khyati is okay," Miguel tweeted later that evening, later deleting it. He also deleted a second tweet that read, "Rockandrollmademedoit."

Following his performance, Miguel showed up backstage with Khyati in tow. In an interview with Billboard editorial director Bill Werde, the two of them even joked about the situation. "Well, I think it's kind of clear what happened," Miguel said. "But I'm very happy to bring my new friend, Khyati, we just met. Unfortunately we did not meet under the best circumstances, but I think we're okay."

"I Adorn him," Khyati played along, in reference to the performed song's title.
