Migos Rapper Offset Responds To Backlash Over Homophobic Lyrics

Migos rapper Offset faced criticism Thursday for his verse on YFN Lucci’s single “Boss Life” that many listeners say is homophobic.

“I cannot vibe with queers,” the Atlanta MC raps on the track.

“Offset saying he doesn’t vibe with queers while constantly wearing and PARADING clothes by gay designers is the REAL gag,” British singer MNEK tweeted.

But many on social media defended the rapper, accusing those who were offended by the lyric of overreacting.

Offset, 26, responded to the backlash in an Instagram post that included a screenshot of the dictionary definition of “queer.”

“I didn’t write the line about gay people,” Offset wrote. “My passion for fashion has lead me to a lot of gay people around me who I have mad respect for and we are very cool so I’m not in a place where I’m hating like that.”

Offset went on to explain that he was thinking of “words that could rhyme with the others (here, lear, soliatire, bear)” and that the lyric referred to a “queer feeling.”

According to Offset, his use of the word “queer” was a substitute for the word “lame.”

This isn’t the first time a member of the rap trio Migos has come under fire for making homophobic remarks.

In a Rolling Stone profile published last February, Offset and fellow Migos rapper Quavo seemed to suggest that homosexuality undermines credibility in hip hop after criticizing ILoveMakonnen, a rapper who came out as gay in 2017.

“The world is f---ed up. This world is not right,” Offset said in response to Quavo questioning why anyone in the rap community could support ILoveMakonnen.

Migos revealed on Monday that “Culture II,” the follow-up to the group’s breakout 2017 album “Culture,” will be released on January 26.
