A well-intentioned new Apple promo in which Mary J. Blige sings an intense ballad about police brutality to Hillary Clinton in a one-on-one interview setting left a wave of fans confused by what they had just watched.
In the head-scratching clip, Blige breaks into song and, at one point, grips the Democratic presidential nominee's hand while Clinton stoically watches on.
"If an officer stops you, always be polite," Blige sings, as intense music blares in the background. "And never, ever run away / Promise mama you'll keep your hands in sight."
Despite its important message, the impassioned performance wasn't particularly well-received by fans, with many deeming the minute-long clip awkward and confounding.
"Who knew you could fit so much embarrassment into one minute," one Twitter user commented on the video, in which Blige kept her eyes closed for the bulk of her rendition.
Another wondered: "Who thought this was a good idea?"
Naturally, a slew of others reacted with memes and GIFs, including one of an exasperated Chrissy Teigen staring perplexedly beyond the camera.
One person even went as far to suggest Apple should "go back in time and delete this idea from whoever's head it came from."
The video was released to promote Blige's new show with Apple Music, "The 411."
That's like having Mary sing for chicken …….
