Mariah Carey Reveals The Real Drama With Eminem

During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Mariah Carey addressed the legendary years-long feud she’s had with Eminem, while playing the game “Plead the Fifth.” Earlier this summer, music producer Damion “Damizza” Young claimed on the TFU podcast that their conflict began when Eminem reportedly asked Carey to portray his mother in the 2002 film 8 Mile. Carey added some insight to those claims. “From what I heard, there is truth to that,” Carey told Cohen. “But I don’t think that he actually… well, who knows who approached who.” When asked whether that request sparked their feud, the 56-year-old remained coy. “Um, no. I mean, maybe. It depends what he’s thinking. I really don’t care. Like, whatever he’s said, then I’m that, fine. Not really. But that’s a rap lyric.” According to Young, the offer was complicated by the fact that Carey is only four years older than Eminem. She ultimately declined the part, and the role went to Kim Basinger. Young also suggested the two may have later had a romantic involvement, a claim Eminem himself fueled on tracks like “When the Music Stops” and “Superman” from The Eminem Show in 2002. Carey, however, has consistently maintained there was no relationship. “I hung out with him, I spoke to him on the phone. I think I was probably with him a total of four times. And I don’t consider that dating somebody,” she reportedly told Larry King even back in 2002. That same year, she released the song “Clown,” seemingly addressing Eminem’s claims: “You should’ve never intimated we were lovers / When you know very well we never even touched each other.” However, in 2006, Eminem explained on his Shade 45 Sirius XM show that, “Yes, me and Mariah did have a relationship for about a good six, seven months. [But] it didn’t work. I wasn’t really into what she was into; our personalities collided. She’s a diva, and I’m a little more regular, I guess.” He added, “I can never deny her talent, but the fact that she denied we ever had something, that’s bad.”The back-and-forth continued when Eminem called out Carey by name on the track “Jimmy Crack Corn,” rapping, “Your mind’s on us like mine’s on Mariah / And y’all are just like her, you’re all f**king liars. In return, Carey dropped the 2009 hit “Obsessed” and its music video, which was widely interpreted as a shot at Eminem. In the visual she dresses up as a male stalker, as a direct response to claims she made about Em. The “Slim Shady” MC fired back later that year with “The Warning,” targeting Carey and her then-husband Nick Cannon. “I’m obsessed now? / Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee? / Wow Mariah, I didn’t expect her to go balls out. / Bi**h, shut the f**k up before I put all them phone calls out you made to my house when you was wild ‘n out before Nick,” he rapped.
