A South Dakota man was arrested after allegedly sitting on a woman and slicing her nipples off with a pair of scissors during an argument Tuesday, police say.
The enraged man, 45-year-old Tony Ledbetter, was arguing with his ex-girlfriend about their relationship when he suddenly "punched" and "slammed her head on the ground," police spokesman Sam Clemens said Wednesday.
Clemens says the 39-year-old woman told investigators that Ledbetter tried to stop her from screaming by putting his forearm on her throat and stuffing a blanket in her mouth.
The man then grabbed a pair of scissors,
sat on her,
and severed the woman's nipples,
causing her to eventually break free from him in search for help, the Argus Leader reports.
The woman was hospitalized, but Clemens says information about her condition has not been released.
According to the paper, Ledbetter's actions prompted him to call 911 after the incident.
The paper also highlights Ledbetter's run-ins with the law. His South Dakota criminal record shows "simple assault convictions" in 2013, and he also has "stalking," and "assault domestic charges," which were later dismissed.
Ledbetter appeared at the Lincoln County Courthouse in Canton, S.D., Thursday on charges of domestic aggravated assault.
On Ledbetter's behalf, a judge entered a not guilty plea and set a cash only bond at $250,000, which his defense attorney says he is unlikely to post.
