A man who was arrested on a parole violation after he was wounded in the slaying of rapper Nipsey Hussle has been released from police custody.
Kerry Lathan, who claims to have been at last month’s shooting scene by chance, was released from a California detention center on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The former gang member — who was struck by a bullet near his spine on March 31 — was released from prison seven months ago after serving 25 years for a murder charge.
Lathan’s attorney, Lauren Noriega, said the 56-year-old man was just an innocent bystander in the tragic shooting.
“He wasn’t there to propose any business to Nipsey,” Noriega told KABC-TV. “He had no idea that Nipsey would be there.”
TMZ had previously reported that Lathan was there to get new clothes from Hussle after his release from prison.
