An Illinois man is behind bars after gouging out his uncle’s eyes during a bloody fight over a TV remote control, cops said.
Exulam Holman, 32, reportedly knocked his 62-year-old uncle to the ground of their Joliet Township home on New Year’s Eve and used his thumbs to pry the victim’s eyeballs out of the sockets, authorities said.
Deputies with the Will County Sheriff’s Department were called to the residence after 10 p.m. Saturday and found the victim at the bottom of a basement staircase.
“They heard someone moaning in the basement area and went downstairs and observed the victim asking for help with his hands stretched out in front for guidance. He said he couldn’t see,” Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer told the Daily News.
“They observed his face cover red with blood with his eyeballs swollen and dislocated from his eye sockets,” she said.
The man told deputies he and his nephew had been fighting over the remote control, and that Holman broke the device as he flew into a violent rage.
Holman allegedly used his hulking 280-pound body to pin his much smaller uncle – who was just 140 pounds – and carry out the vicious assault before pushing the uncle down the stairs.
Miraculously, the uncle was able to call 911 as he battled pain and teetered on the brink of losing consciousness, Hoffmeyer said.
Holman, who has a long rap sheet with more than two dozen arrests, was found hiding in a locked bedroom and taken into custody, cops said. He will face two felony charges for aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery, and faces up to seven years in prison.
A judge ordered him held on $1 million bond Tuesday.
“Due to the brutality of the assault, I hope the court system can take this guy off the street and end this string of assaults and batteries he’s been charged with since 1999,” Hoffmeyer said Wednesday.
She said the victim was released from the hospital Wednesday but will require more surgeries.
“He stated he had limited vision in his right eye, just shadows, and loss of vision in left,” she said.
