A Japanese zoo has discovered that two hyenas it was trying to mate are both male.
Zookeepers at Maruyama Zoo in northern Japan had been trying to get the animals to mate for a year, reports Rocket News.
The zoo claimed it had been given the hyenas - Kamutori and Kami - as a "male and female couple" in 2010 by a Korean zoo.
But in a statement, Maruyama Zoo said that the animals had been aggressive towards each other rather than mate. The fighting got so bad between the two that they had to be put in separate cages.
"We have determined that the two animals are both male after conducting ultrasound imaging and hormone tests on them under anaesthesia."
The zoo said it was difficult to determine the sex of a hyena from external genitalia.
