IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

Hair's the ultimate way to show Yankees pride.
Forget replica jerseys and baseball caps - die-hard Bombers boosters wear their team's logo on their noggin.

Hairdos sporting the iconic interlocking NY are all the rage among the faithful during the Yanks' World Series run.

"It's good luck," said Tom McBride, 38, who was spotted with the cutting-edge haircut during the public broadcast of Game 4 in Yankee Stadium.

The last time the electrician from Maspeth, Queens, donned the 'do was during the 2000 Series against the Mets - which was also the last time the Yankees hoisted the trophy.

"I only do it for the World Series," he said, taking in the action with his girlfriend, Denilla Grion, as fellow fans checked out his hair, some snapping pictures of his cool coiffure.

McBride is not alone, said Eliath Pineda, 34, a barber at Astor Place Hair Designers in the East Village, where more than a dozen similar cuts were made in the past week.

"The Yankees have to be doing well, and they have to be a hard-core fan," Pineda said of the typical customer who requests the haircut.

The Washington Heights haircutter uses a stencil and spray paint to apply the symbol.

He then trims around it before cutting off the surrounding hair.

The $40 hairdo takes some 25 minutes to produce and usually lasts about three weeks before the symbol fills in.

"It's like getting a tattoo, but it's not permanent," said Pineda, who started out as a graffiti artist. "I consider it art."

While giving the Yankees cut to Luis Romero, 35, Pineda said he figured this will be a busy time.

"I knew the Yankees are going to the World Series so I'll get a lot of requests," he said. "I'm very happy they made it."

The interlocking NY - probably the world's most recognizable team logo - was designed by Tiffany & Co., and became the official team insignia exactly 100 years ago.

Popular as it remains today, not all Yankees fans are quite ready to imprint it on their mop.

"It would be fun," said Matt Kranz, 25, a Bombers supporter who manages a Union Square bar, "but my bosses wouldn't like it too much."

For McBride, however, the haircut may be just a first step. In the event of a Yankees World Series win, he said he'll go all pinstripes on his scalp.

"I'll have to paint the whole thing," he said.
