Dining diva Rachael Ray unveiled her healthy new lunch for students at Public School 89 in Tribeca on Monday before a gaggle of reporters - and one brazen cockroach.
The six-legged intruder was spotted marching across a countertop a few feet from where Ray was touting the benefits of good food - and before kids bit into her special "sizzling soft tacos."
Ray's publicist Charlie Dougiello made a beeline for the bug and swatted it away - right in front of a Daily News reporter.
"What?" a surprised Ray said when asked about it later. "I did not see that. It's unfortunate if there was [a bug]. I think that these schools strive to be the best across the board; I'm sure that includes cleanliness."
Ray said she had checked out the school kitchen earlier and it looked like a "very clean, fantastic environment."
Embarrassed school officials vowed to "take care of it."
"We have the highest standards," said Eric Goldstein, chief executive for school foods. "If there is any reported problem, we aggressively jump on it."
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) said she didn't see the roach, and when asked about school cleanliness, she said, "You have to talk to the Department of Ed about that."
Ray's chicken tacos, filled with roasted corn and her special ranch sauce - along with steamed broccoli and vegetarian "veghead" beans - are on the menu this week at more than 1,200 public schools across the city.
The aim is to get kids to eat healthier meals.
"If we can improve the health of our children, then it changes the future of our country," she said.
Ray's first foray into cafeteria food got a thumbs up from some of the city's toughest food critics - sixth-graders at PS 89.
"It just doesn't taste like the normal cafeteria food," said 11-year-old Coby Levinson. "It tastes better."
Peyton Avrans, also 11, savored the flavor.
"I like the beans the best because I eat chicken a lot," she said.
