It was a gun buyback, not a bomb buyback.
A dimwit was being held by police Saturday after he attempted to turn over a live hand grenade to police at a gun-buyback program in the Bronx.
Police evacuated the New Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ and surrounding buildings around 1:30 p.m. after the unidentified man waltzed in with an improvised hand grenade, officials said.
The NYPD's Bomb Squad unit arrived at the E. 173rd St. church wearing protective gear around 4:30 p.m. and left 15 minutes later with the grenade, carting it out in a special carrier.
Police were questioning the man Saturday night, but a law enforcement source said it was unlikely he would be charged with any crime.
The program, which offers $200 for guns - no questions asked - had kicked off Saturday across the borough, a spokesman for the Bronx district attorney's office said.
