A police officer accidentally shot herself in the leg Friday while holstering her handgun on Rikers Island.
Officials said emergency workers were called to the jail complex about 11:30 a.m. They took the 49-year-old officer to Elmhurst General Hospital in Queens, where she was in stable condition.
A source said the officer and a partner, assigned to the Brooklyn warrant squad, had just taken a prisoner to the jail. She holstered her weapon and one round went off.
Cops have to check their weapons before visiting prisoners or escorting them beyond a certain point at the jail.
The bullet traveled through her lower thigh and exited the back of her calf, the source said. Police withheld the identity of the officer.
