Call off that waaaahmbulance.
Us Weekly has published reports from an insider claiming that Chris Brown's crying fit at the BET Awards was, in fact, a sham.
The embattled R&B singer, 21, raised eyebrows when he broke down in tears during his Michael Jackson tribute at the BET Awards this past week. Decked out in the King of Pop's trademark fedora and glittering glove, the singer performed a medley of Jackson hits but teared up when he got to "Man in the Mirror."
The insider says that Brown's tears weren't from the heart, but rather from some eye-drops a bodyguard applied to the singer just before the performance.
"He rubbed it in and he started crying," the source tells the gossip site.
But a rep for Brown has refuted claims that the tears came from a bottle.
"[He] was moved by the opportunity to pay tribute to his idol," he told entertainmentwise.com.
The Jackson tribute was Brown's best-received comeback attempt. Critics seemed universally impressed by Brown's showmanship and passion -- Entertainment Weekly graded it A+ -- during the BET performance, although the tears were a common point of contention.
Brown fell from grace last February after beating up then-girlfriend and fellow music star Rihanna. Radio stations pulled his tracks from rotation and he lost his deal with Wrigley's gum as a result of the incident.
His latest record, "Graffiti," got mixed reviews from critics this past winter but did spawn the hit "I Can Transform Ya," with Lil' Wayne and Swizz Beatz.
