Apple has rejected a controversial iPhone game that allows players to smuggle as many illegal immigrants as possible over a border.
Alex Schwartz, developer of the Boston company Owlchemy Labs, said Thursday the game's rejection was content-related, but would not elaborate.
"Smuggle Truck: Operation Immigration" created a firestorm in February after the company unveiled the game.
Players drive a truck over what is apparently the U.S.-Mexican border. Players win points for keeping the immigrants from falling off the vehicle and ultimately crossing the border.
Schwartz said the creators wanted to spotlight immigration reform.
"Smuggle Truck was inspired by the frustration our friends have experienced in trying to immigrate to the United States," the game's website says. It adds that the intent is to stir "discussion on ways to improve the problematic immigration system in the United States."
Apple did not immediately return phone calls for comment. The game is still available on PCs and Macs.
Gamers can also play in a "legal immigration mode," which gives participants the opportunity to sit in a waiting room and stare at a clock that counts down over the next 20 years.
The creators say the option is meant to spotlight the "efficiency of the modern immigration process."
In March, Apple came under fire when it launched a iPhone "gay cure" app that claimed to help gay individuals become heterosexual through biblical teaching. The company later pulled the game.
