Yes, folks, bird poop can sometimes be iconic. At least when it's done by Jeff Staple.
That's why the famed urban designer, who's worked with such companies as Nike and New Balance in the past, made it a point to put a signature splotch of painted bird poop on the right side of his new custom-designed Beats by Dr. Dre Studio headphones.
"It's iconic," he said. "It's how we always do it."
It's a decidedly New York look, which is why Beats is hoping the headphones are a hit in New York. Only 500 of the so-called "Pigeon Beats" were made, and they are only available in Manhattan, either at the company's flagship Beats store in SoHo, or Reed Space, a Manhattan store that sells iconic fashion gear.
"With Beats, it's almost a fashion statement now," Staple said. "You see people just walking around with them around their neck."
These slick, slate-and-grey-colored phones certainly look distinct, too, starting with the bird poop. Above the right earcup, there's a small pigeon; on the left side, "Staple" is scrawled in a unique font.
The new set debuted during a release party at the Beats store last week.
"People will like wearing them on the street," Staple said.
Just don't let any real birds, well, you know . . .
