The bears are bare!
Veterinarians at a zoo in Leipzig, Germany are mystified over what's been causing female spectacled bears to lose nearly all of their hair, reports Britain's Daily Mail.

The bears characteristically sport thick coats of shaggy fur, but the females among the zoo's bear family are practically bald and their hides now bear a closer resemblance to the rough, dry skin of elephants, than the thick manes of their male counterparts.

Caretakers at the zoo are investigating whether a genetic defect may have caused the hair loss.

While the bears' malady is troubling for zookeepers, it's fascinating for zoo visitors – who have reportedly turned out in droves to gawk at the strange sight of these hairless creatures.

The spectacled bears, native to South America, are named so because their faces are usually marked by eyeglass-shaped rings.
