Don't expect to see Bert and Ernie picking out their wedding china just yet.
Hot on the heels of an online petition asking "Sesame Street" to have the striped-sweater-loving roommates marry, producers have responded.

"Bert and Ernie are best friends," insists a post on Facebook. "They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

Over one thousand people have already signed the change.org petition asking for the Bert and Ernie to come out as a gay couple.

"We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful," reads the petition for the muppet merger. "It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different."

A debate over the sexuality of Sesame Street's most famous duo has dogged the show since Bert and Ernie first appeared in 1969.
