IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

Life is easy for a girl named "Facebook."

A proud Egyptian papa has named his first born daughter after the social media giant to honor the role it played in the country's revolution, reports TechCrunch.

The word "Facebook" displayed throughout Cairo on graffiti and in protest signs, was seen as a beacon of free-flowing information during the chaos that ignited on Jan. 25 and lasted through the final days of Hosni Mubarak's political reign.

"The girl's family, friends, and neighbors in the Ibrahimya region gathered around the new born to express their continuing support for the revolution that started on Facebook," the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reported. "'Facebook' received many gifts from the youth who were overjoyed by her arrival and the new name."

TechCrunch provided the translation.

Facebook's following in Egypt following has continued to grow since its government upheaval and the nation now has more than 5 million active users – more than anywhere else in the North Africa/Middle East region.

The interim military government is using the site to reach out to young people and to restore confidence after the violence wracked the nation.

Google exec Wael Ghonim, who had been kidnapped for 12 days for organizing protests against the Mubarak government, credited social media, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for allowing the dissemination of ideas and protests.

Facebook is also credited with helping protestors to topple Tunisia's government.

After fruit seller Mohammed Bouazizi burned himself in protest outside a government office, videos and images of state violence against demonstrators went viral on Facehook, uniting Tunisian youth in a fight that ended with that country's leader stepping down.

When asked by CNN's Wolf Blitzer what country would experience a revolution next, Ghonim answeed, "Ask Facebook."
