LOS ANGELES - Anna Nicole Smith took methadone while pregnant with daughter Dannielynn because she was worried she might lose the baby if she went into withdrawal, her ex-boyfriend testified Friday.
Larry Birkhead, Dannielynn's dad, said the ex-Playmate suffered a prior miscarriage and was excited about her 2006 pregnancy, which she announced to him around Valentine's Day.
"She said she was trying to cut down on the amounts but if she didn't take it she could go into shock and she could possibly lose the baby," Birkhead said during a preliminary hearing for two doctors and Smith's lawyer-boyfriend Howard K. Stern.
The three defendants have pleaded not guilty to charges they funneled mountains of pills to Smith to remain in her entourage.
Birkhead said Smith told him she used methadone to treat back pain caused by her large breast implants.
He described her as plagued by excruciating pain, headaches, swollen hands and seizures.
He also said Smith regularly drank out of baby bottles and even kept a stash of baby food by her bed for midnight snacking.
An investigator testified Tuesday that Smith was drinking Pedialyte from a baby bottle shortly before her overdose death on Feb. 8, 2007.
