Kevin Gates spoke with Shannon Sharpe about being sexually assaulted as a child on the latest episode of Club Shay Shay. While discussing his 2021 interview on Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson where he opened up about being molested, Gates confirmed he was sexually assaulted as a teenager. When asked if he was threatened about disclosing his childhood abuse, the rapper responded, "He did," adding, "Yeah, he outta here." After an uncomfortable pause, Sharpe said, "I guess I'll leave that alone." The Pro Football Hall of Famer then asked about his abuser's cause of death, to which Gates reiterated, "He outta here," before saying with a smile, "He'll never do that to anybody again." Coming away of that situation, Gates believes he "broke generational curses" by preventing further victims of sexual assault, while also creating an open line of communication with his children. "I don't wanna say too much, but I really broke generational curses with that situation because people that came before me, they was raped," he said. "And it created the space for me to have with my children to where my children know, don't nobody never touch you, not even me. I had these open conversations with my children, they are equipped. I created a space for them to be able to tell their dad anything." Gates shared that sharing his sexual abuse has led to interactions with men, who have hugged him, and shed tears while in the gym. "I created a space, and I tell them, 'You was vulnerable.' Then, we have built ourselves into machines to where we can protect the inner child.
