After he was criticized for going on an anti-Mexican rant, comedian Katt Williams has offered a mea culpa.
"My remarks were not meant to be offensive. I want to apologize if my comedy act was taken out of context," Williams said in a statement to the Daily News.
"I sincerely appreciate my fans within the Mexican community and would never intentionally go out of my way to offend them."
On Aug. 20, Williams was performing at a club in Phoenix, Ariz. on when he was heckled by a man of Mexican descent.
Losing his patience, the comedian turned on the heckler, unleashing a stream of remarks against Mexicans living the United States.
His rant included a few "USA!" chants and a rendition of the National Anthem.
The heckler was eventually removed by security.
The incident has sparked some angry responses from his fans on YouTube and from prominent members of the Latino community, including author Luis Rodriguez.
However, it seems that some people are appreciative of the apology, although it's not enough.
"My challenge to him will be for him to return to show his face, to show his commitment to the Latino community and his commitment to civil rights," Rev. Jarrett Maupin told CNN.
"I have compassion for Katt Williams. It's up to him to let the community know if he's going through some personal or professional challenges."
