Established divas Lady Gaga and Beyonce, tied with female MC Nicki Minaj at three VMA nominations each - the three chicks help round out the rest of the nominees for "Best Female Video": Gaga, for horn-and-latex-inspired "Born This Way"; Beyonce, for girl-power anthem "Run The World (Girls)"; and Nicki Minaj for sassy "Super Bass."
Not that the men fared so badly themselves. Kanye led the pack with seven nominations - including "Best Male Video" for his work on "All of The Lights" and "Best Special Effects" for "Power."
Breakout artist Bruno Mars edged into the running for "Video of the Year" with driving single "Grenade," and picked up three other nominations as well, including a "Best Choreography" nod for quirky, monkey-laden "The Lazy Song."
And Justin Bieber, not to be outdone, staked his claim in the big leagues with fellow nominees Cee Lo Green, Bruno Mars, Eminem and Kanye West in the "Best Male Video" category for "U Smile."
The MTV VMAs are set to air on Sunday, August 28.
