JURY AWARDS SNITCHES MOTHER A MILLION DOLLARS & TAKES IT BACK!

A Brooklyn jury awarded $1 million Wednesday - then took it back from a woman suing an NYPD sergeant and a cop for failing to protect her informant son, who was murdered.

The bizarre verdict in Brooklyn Federal Court found no one responsible for Anthony Velez's killing in Brownsville - but the jury acknowledged the city "had a duty to protect" him.

Velez was gunned down Feb. 21, 2004, shortly after Sgt. Michael Ruggiero and Officer Rudolph Hall recovered a gun and crack inside an apartment based on Velez's tip.

Ruggiero and Hall insisted they did not blow Velez's cover, and city lawyers argued that the motive for the unsolved slaying remains unclear.

The plaintiff's expert, retired Lt. Joseph Pollini, said the cops had exposed Velez to danger by not arresting him along with the others in the apartment.

After deliberating for four hours, the jury cleared the cops but awarded the victim's mother, Towanda Velez, $1 million in damages and $4,000 for his funeral.

Judge Eric Vitaliano told the jurors the verdict made no sense, and they returned to deliberate for about one hour before reaching a second verdict that awarded no damages.

City lawyer Morgan Kunz said in a statement: "The city feels deeply for the Velez family. However, we appreciate the jury's recognition that the Police Department did not act inappropriately."
