Johnny Depp To Play LAPD Detective Who Investigated The Murders Of Tupac & Biggie Smalls

Johnny Depp is taking on a new leading role of yet another real life person. The Sleepy Hollow actor will play the persona of Russell Poole, a retired LAPD detective who was responsible for investigating the murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.

The movie, which is reportedly titled Labyrinth, will be directed by Brad Furman, The Hollywood Reporter states. During his investigation period, Poole believed that when it came to Biggie’s murder, a suspected group of “gangsta cops” within his task force, who he assumed to be tied to Suge Knight’s Death Row Records, might’ve been linked to the “Sky’s The Limit” rapper’s death.

Michael Douglas Carlin, co-author of “Chaos Merchants: Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG” with Poole, said that the former detective thought Biggie’s murder was an inside job by Death Row.

“And he blamed Suge for it. And he was very vocal about that,” Carlin said. “And he was going to the sheriff’s to apologize to Suge Knight and tell the investigators that they had this case against Suge that’s crumbling. And to abandon that case and get on board with solving the two biggest mysteries in rock n’ roll history. Or in music history…He felt very bad.”

Poole passed away in August of last year of a heart attack. The New York Daily News reports that he met with murder investigators to discuss Biggie’s cold case, but he passed shortly after the meeting occurred.
