John Legend Takes Center Stage
John Legend, a current New York City resident, is a nine-time Grammy Award winning musician, world-renowned performer, philanthropist/social activist, and one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people.
Legend's debut album "Get Lifted," released in 2004, earned him eight Grammy nominations with three wins for best R&B album, best R&B male vocal performance, and best new artist. Other releases include "Once Again" (2006), "Evolver" (2008), and "Wake Up!" (2010), a collaboration with The Roots.
While Legend was born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, his New York ties run deep. Besides living in the Big Apple, Legend has given some memorable performances in the New York City area. In 2008, Legend treated fans to a private event at NYC's Highline Ballroom, where he performed songs from "Evolver."
Outside of music, Legend is involved in numerous social and charitable causes that benefit the city's youth. He is vice chairman of the Harlem Village Academies, a New York City organization that runs several charter schools, and was named BET Humanitarian of the Year in 2010.
Salomé Chamber Orchestra
Legend will be performing at Yahoo! On the Road with the Salomé Chamber Orchestra, New York City's incredible conductor-less string ensemble.
The Manhattan-based orchestra, formed in 2009, performs everything from Baroque to contemporary tunes, and their talent has been showcased at notable venues across the city over the past few years. The group has worked with Sharon Isbin, among other solo performers, and their set with Legend on Friday is sure to be a great one.
Ryan Leslie
Grammy nominee Ryan Leslie is also no stranger to the bright lights of New York City. Leslie, a 34-year-old multi-instrumentalist, delivered two notable performances on back-to-back nights at Bowery Ballroom in 2010. Three years later, Leslie has even more soulful material to draw from, including selections from his forthcoming "Black Mozart" album.
