Jerrod Carmichael Says Dave Chappelle Demanded Apology From Him For Calling Out His Anti-Trans Jokes

During an interview with Esquire Magazine, Jerrod stated that his issues with Dave began after he criticized Chappelle’s anti-trans views. The Poor Things actor expressed that he took his critique as “F**k Dave Chappelle.” He then described Chappelle as an “egomaniac” who demanded an apology for his criticism. “He took it as ‘F**k Dave Chappelle,’ because he’s an egomaniac,” Carmichael said. “He wanted me to apologize to him publicly or some sh*t…[He’s] not revealing anything personal about himself, and he’s removed from what he’s talking about. I think he’s smarter than that, deeper than that, and has more interesting thoughts. Jerrod’s initial comments arrived through an interview with GQ in 2022. He addressed Chappelle’s string of anti-trans jokes in his comedy specials at the time, specifically his 2021 Netflix special, The Closer. Carmichael stated that the icon’s legacy was at stake every time he decided to peddle hateful rhetoric in his stand-up specials. The North Carolina native also called out the oft-spoken “cancel culture” that Dave claimed fueled the backlash against his jokes.
