Jermaine Dupri has continued his streak of doling out unsolicited advice.
Dupri, 46, was criticized by Cardi B, among others, for comments he made earlier this month about female rappers. “They all rapping about the same thing,” Dupri told People TV. “I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s like strippers rapping. As far as rap goes, I’m not getting who’s the best rapper. I’m getting, like, OK, you got a story about dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club, who’s going to be the rapper?”
Cardi responded to Dupri on Instagram, saying, “There’s a lot of female rappers that be rapping they ass off,” later naming Tierra Whack, Rapsody, Oranicuhh and Kamaiyah as examples.
The rapper-producer attempted to clarify his comments in an interview published Thursday by Atlanta BlackStar, noting that he wasn’t referring to all female rappers, just the ones who rap about stripping.
“What people don’t understand is I actually believe that these women that do this type of music should start calling it ‘strap,'” he said, coining a portmanteau of “stripper” and “rap.” “I think just like we have trap [music], they should call it strap. It’s the stories of their life.”
Dupri explained that he’s simply an advocate of genre specificity, bringing up hip-hop trends gone by like crunk and snap. “Name your genre. There’s nothing wrong with naming it. Name it, because that’s what you do.” He relates a story about Dupri an appearance he made “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” where he told one of Mimi Faust’s artists to “create a genre called ‘stripper fight music.'”
Dupri added that he doesn’t regret his comments: “I’m getting press for talking about music … I would never change that for nothing in the world … To be a number one trending topic on Twitter [talking] about music, I didn’t plan it, but I’ll take it.”
