Jay Z's Tidal Hires It's Third CEO In 8 Months

This third CEO could be the charm.

Jay Z’s troubled music-streaming service, Tidal, has hired its third CEO in just eight months, a spokesperson told the Daily News on Wednesday.

The lucky man is former SoundCloud executive Jeff Toig, who follows CEO Peter Tonstad, who held the position for just three months before resigning in June; and Andy Chen, who left in April after his own short reign. The company’s former chief investment officer, Vania Schlogel, also resigned over the summer.

Toig said he wasn't daunted by the challenge of heading Tidal, which badly trails other steaming services.

"Tidal … has exclusive content, deep connection with the artists — A-list artists — live events like Tidal X, and a unique set of assets," Toig told Billboard. "It's early in the game, but the seeds have been planted and it creates a really fascinating foundation."

Jay Z launched Tidal in March after buying and rebranding the Swedish streaming service Aspiro. He has sought to lure fans with exclusive content.

Tidal has roughly 1 million subscribers paying $10-$20 a month, but it still trails behind streaming giants like Spotify, with 20 million paying customers, and Apple Music, which has 6.5 million subscribers. Both streaming services also have millions of users who don't pay.

Toig takes over on Jan. 4. In the same Billboard interview, he said Jay Z remains committed to the business.

"This isn't a short-term play," he said. "This is a long-term investment."
