Jay-Z is a tastemaker, but these days he's having his tastes made for him — by a bunch of young hipsters.
Two weeks ago, the hip-hop mogul followed in the celeb footsteps of Gwyneth Paltrow and Russell Simmons by launching a personal website, lifeandtimes.com.
The site's attracted plenty of attention: It's 'a new lifestyle website showcasing the rapper's taste in high-end cars, clothes and gadgets,' according to Rolling Stone, or, as Fader.com eloquently put it, 'stuff [Jay-Z] likes.'
But Fader, like a number of others, was left wondering 'how the editorial process works over at Life + Times.' A cryptic 'About' page for the site shares nothing but a quote from the mogul and his initials: ' ‘… Just a bit of inspiration' – SC.'
What does it take to write for Jay-Z? A source close to the situation tells us it's certainly not a Pulitzer Prize. Hova has recruited several 'young tastemakers' from around the city (including at least one who has not yet graduated from college) and given them an impressive platform to decide what's haute.
Unlike Fader.com, we won't question Jay's interest in Garance Dore (fashion photographer and lady love of Scott 'The Sartorialist' Schuman) — but her recent appearance on Life + Times makes more sense when we imagine it was suggested by a blog-bound twentysomething.
The writers 'pitch him a story idea about a new band or trend and then he approves it,' says the insider. 'They find what's hot and then bring it to him — not vice versa.' An array of unfamous young journalists' names (along with the generic 'Life + Times' byline) flank the articles, along with one more: S.C.
Jay-Z – or Sean Corey Carter – started working on the site more than a year ago, and a few posts do bear his own initials, including an interview with GOOP gal and pal Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as a pic of his hand and a shoe with the title 'These Sh—s Right Here.' But for the most part, he seems to be staying true to his 'Light Up' credo: 'I don't do too much blogging, I just run the town.'
If you're interested in working for Beyoncé's hubby, don't expect to find a job ad on Craigslist. Two people involved with the website were quick to tell us that Jay-Z wants to be as secretive as possible about the happenings of Life + Times. He wants to keep the site 'very cool and laid-back' and make it seem 'like it just happens.' Naturally, that includes the elusive hiring and acquiring process of his site's limited staff.
A spokeswoman for Jay-Z declined to comment.
