Jay Z and Will Smith are collaborating on a new miniseries to tell the story of Emmett Till.
The rapper and movie star have teamed up for an HBO miniseries about the tragic death of Till, a 14-year-old who was savagely murdered in 1955 in what is considered one of the nation’s most brutal hate crimes.
Till’s death made headlines when his mother Mamie Till Mobley chose to have an open-casket funeral to expose the brutality the teen experienced before he was killed.
Till’s murder was considered a galvanizing force in the civil rights movement, and September marks the 60th anniversary of his death.
Jay Z and Smith are producing what is expected to be a six-hour series with TV producer Aaron Kaplan, according to Deadline.
The miniseries, which is described as “an immersive and in-depth exploration of the Emmett Till story,” does not yet have a title or premiere date.
The HBO series isn’t the first time Jay Z and Smith have collaborated on a project: The two also produced the 2014 musical movie “Annie” and the Broadway production of “Fela!”
