Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Meek Mill Pen Open Letter Calling For Justice For Ahmaud Arbery

Musicians Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Meek Mill and Yo Gotti on Sunday urged Georgia officials to take swift action in the case of Ahmaud Arbery.

The stars signed an open letter published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution demanding justice for Arbery, the unarmed black jogger gunned down in February, allegedly by two white men.

The letter calls on District Attorney Tom Durden to be recused from the case over a conflict of interest, since Gregory McMichael, one of the two men charged with murder, was a former police officer.

It asks state Attorney General Christopher Carr to appoint a special prosecutor so a fair trial can be achieved.

Charges brought Thursday against McMichael, 64, and his 34-year-old son Travis are “a positive step on the long road toward justice,” the letter said.

“But it only strengthens our resolve to see that justice is eventually served.”

The letter also demands that a third man who filmed the shooting be charged as an accomplice.

The letter was released by Team Roc, the social justice arm of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation entertainment company and also signed by attorneys Lee Merritt and Benjamin Crump, who represent members of Arbery’s family.

The case drew national attention last week when cellphone video that appeared to show the killing was released. Outrage grew further because no one had yet been charged.

Later on Sunday, Carr formally requested that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate the handling of the case.
