Janelle Monae became ill after going on a pescatarian diet, the singer revealed in a new interview.
“I started feeling my mortality,” she told The Cut, sharing that she had been battling mercury poisoning.
Pescatarian diets consist of mostly fruits, vegetables and fish and seafood are the main source of protein.
According to the World Health Organization, mercury is highly toxic to humans and people can become poisoned when they consume contaminated fish.
Monae, 34, revealed she was sick because she told The Cut she wants to have children, but is waiting until she is healthy again to carry a child.
The “Make Me Feel” singer has expressed a desire to have her own kids in the past.
“I want to have children, but I don’t want to miss that time because I was so focused on my career and because I didn’t plan accordingly,” she said in April 2018. “That scares me most now more than anything.”
