Jamie Foxx's heavyweight career is taking another boxing turn.
He appeared as the man behind one of the greatest boxers in the world in 2001’s "Ali," as Cassius Clay’s corner man Drew Bundini Brown. But now Foxx, 46, will play another ring legend: Mike Tyson.
Foxx will star as Iron Mike in a yet untitled Terence Winter-penned biopic, according to Variety magazine.
The Tyson story — highlighted with his defense of his heavyweight title, a polarizing personality in and out of the ring, the Evander Holyfield ear-bite heard around the world, and a rape conviction that marred his image — is one that Hollywood has been attempting to bring to life on screen for years, Variety reports.
Winter, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and producer most recently behind "The Wolf of Wall Street," will reportedly collaborate with Foxx's manager, Rick Yorn, to produce the sports epic. A studio is not yet attached to the project.
Foxx, who next appears in a big screen reboot of “Annie,” took home his first Oscar for playing musician Ray Charles in 2004’s “Ray.” His most notable sports role came in 1999’s “Any Given Sunday” as footballer Willie Beamen.
It's unclear what parts of Tyson’s life on which Winter will focus, but it isn't the first time the retired boxer’s story will be dramatized. HBO produced TV movie "Tyson" in 1995, starring Michael Jai White.
Meanwhile Tyson himself, 48, has continued his career in other avenues. In addition to appearing in "The Hangover," he became a bestselling author with the release of his memoir "Undisputed Truth" in 2013, and performed an accompanying one-man stage show, “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth,” produced by Spike Lee.
It is unclear if the boxing Hall-of-Famer will also be involved in the making of the Foxx film.
