Jaden Smith Says He Wears Skirts So Kids ‘Won’t Get Beat Up’ For Doing It

Jaden Smith is skirting gender norms.

The oldest child of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith wore a dress to prom, has appeared on his own Instagram sporting nail polish, models womenswear for Louis Vuitton and he’s broken down gender barriers every step of the way.

“You just have to believe in yourself, you know,” the celebrity teen told Nylon. “The world is going to keep bashing me for whatever I do, and I’m going to keep not caring. I’m going to keep doing the same things — I’m going to keep doing more things.”

Jaden said he hopes to “take most of the blows” so others can embrace their inner-selves just as he has.

“So, you know, in five years when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won’t get beat up and kids won’t get mad at him. It just doesn’t matter,” he explained to the magazine. “I’m taking the brunt of it so that later on, my kids and the next generations of kids will all think that certain things are normal that weren’t expected before my time.”

Creative director of Louis Vuitton Nicolas Ghesquière, who signed Jaden on to model his spring/summer ’16 women’s campaign earlier this year said, “Wearing a skirt comes as naturally to him as it would to a woman who, long ago, granted herself permission to wear a man’s trench or tuxedo ... He’s found an instinctive balance that makes his extraordinary attitude a new norm.”

Smith told Nylon he and the other models knew that shoot would be important.

“It was lit because we all knew that we were going to impact the culture and change the game and make a difference.”

And Jaden said all his confidence is rooted in his upbringing.

“The greatest lesson I’ve learned from my parents is to be myself, at all costs,” he said, “no matter what.”
