Rapper Ja Rule is set to begin his prison sentence on Wednesday and says he's more than prepared for the situation ahead.
"You just kind of mentally get yourself prepared for what it is and what it's gonna be," the 35-year-old said on FOX5's "Good Day New York" Monday.
Growing up in Hollis, Queens, the rapper said he felt "groomed for these types of situations" and that going to jail never felt "foreign."
"It's sad because you know a lot of people that have been to prison, in and out of prison, doing life," he told co-anchors Rosanna Scotto and Greg Kelly.
"You kind of understand it more than the average person," he added. "The average person is more like 'wow, you going to jail? I couldn't fathom somebody going to jail'...[but] my cousin's been...my uncle's been, or my girlfriend's man has been in."
Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, is set to surrender on Wednesday to begin a two-year sentence after pleading guilty to a 2007 charge of attempted gun possession. Police discovered the firearm when they pulled over the rapper's car after a concert at NYC's Beacon Theatre.
"Laws are laws," he said. "These are the laws of New York City and they're very strict laws ... you obviously know that when you're in the city of New York."
He went on to say that he does believe the gun laws in New York City are "a little bit extreme" but that once the gun was found, "there's nothing I could really do but own up to the situation and man up, and take the charge."
The rapper married Aisha Atkins in 2001 and the couple have three children. He revealed that "if there's anything I regret, I regret that they have to go through this with me and I'm not going to be there for them."
Ja Rule has been busy working on "Pain Is Love 2," his latest studio album, in an effort to get it to fans before going behind bars, but the release has now been pushed back to give producers more time for finishing touches.
"It was important to me because I love my fans," he said. "I love making music. For me, it's more of an art ... and I just wanted to get it out there for the people before I go in."
