J. Cole has revisted his apology to Kendrick Lamar after dissing him on “7 Minute Drill," revealing that his wife cried when he told her he was going to do it. In a video shared Cole sat down with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis for his his first interview since releasing new album The Fall-Off, where he revealed what prompted him to apologize to Kendrick after releasing his initial diss record. After Cole dubbed himself, Kendrick and Drake the 'Big Three' on his and Drizzy's 2023 collaboration, "First Person Shooter," K. Dot denounced the idea, firing back at the claim on his "Like That" collaboration with Future and Metro Boomin in early 2024. Cole, taking issue with Kendrick's slight, decided to respond, taking aim at Kendrick on his surprise mixtape, Might Delete Later. Following the release of "7 Minute Drill," Cole apologized to the GNX artist onstage at the 2024 Dreamville Festival, calling the song the "lamest, goofiest shit" he’s done. During his interview with Apple Music, Cole gave more insight into the apology, which was encouraged by his wife of 11 years, Melissa Heholt. In the video below, Cole can be seen explaining how the decision came to him an hour before his set. "But before that, I was stressing the fuck out," he said. "But in the moment that the idea came to me…I lifted and I got light and I got excited.” In the few days before the set, Cole realized that his decision to drop “7 Minute Drill" was "terrible" because he "misrepresented" himself. The rapper eventually pulled the song from streaming. “All of a sudden I'm giving life to division and to negative storylines or negative perceptions on somebody that I fuck with and got love for," he explained. Cole added that he felt "miserable" about the song and that his wife noticed something was off by his demeanor. "I told my wife. She the only one I told, I ain't tell nobody else. I’m like, 'Yo, this what I'm about to go do. She starts crying because she knows I feel about him," Cole explained. "And she saw how it was weighing on me the two, three days before that." Cole added that he "felt even better" once the apology was given, in interview expressed that he has "genuine love" for K. Dot and Drizzy despite their feud.
