IN RATINGS NEW YORK "URBAN" RADIO IS OFF THE CHARTS!

With a single exception, no "urban" radio station in America has even come close to the number of ears that Hot-97, Power-105, WBLS and Kiss-FM get in New York.

Writing in Radio-Info.com, ratings analyst Chris Huff notes that's true both for "urban" stations, which focus on hip-hop and younger listeners, and "urban adult contemporary" that goes for the adult crowd.

According to the June Arbitron ratings, WQHT (Hot-97, 97.1 FM) had 3.314 million people tune in at some point during the average week, while WWPR (Power-105, 105.1 FM) had 3.211 million.

That's an impressive number, but here's what makes it staggering. KPWR in Los Angeles averaged 2.927 million listeners per week, and with that one exception, both Hot-97 and Power-105 have more than twice the average weekly audience of any other urban station in the country.

No other station averaged more than 1.5 million.

In the "urban adult contemporary" area, the gap is a little less dramatic, but still cavernous.

WBLS (107.5 FM) has an average of 2.135 million people tuning in at some point during the week, and WRKS (98.7 FM) has 1.959 million.

A distant third is WVAZ in Chicago with 1.284 million.

Part of this, of course, is just the sheer size of New York. But it also illustrates the power and influence of radio here.

Who Run Sh!t? We Do! Lol! Just wish they would stop playing the same 20 songs over & over again! C'mon Son! Marvin's Room get's played like 50 times a day & so does Motivation! I like them but there's so much other music out there!
