Sorry, stoners. Now even marijuana copycat chemicals have been banned.
The Drug Enforcement Agency used its emergency powers to end the sale of five chemicals used to make synthetic pot like "K2" and "Spice" on Tuesday.
The DEA said the herbs, while legal in many states, are an imminent threat to public health. The ban will last at least one year as officials determine whether the sale of such chemicals should be made permanently illegal.
The ban was first proposed in November, amid increasing reports of hallucinations seizures, and dependency on the drugs, which provide a marijuana-like high when smoked.
At least 16 states already have taken action to control one or more of the chemicals, which are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
"Young people are being harmed when they smoke these dangerous 'fake pot' products and wrongly equate the products' 'legal' retail availability with being 'safe,' " said DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart in a press release.
"Today's action, while temporary, will reduce the number of young people being seen in hospital emergency rooms after ingesting these synthetic chemicals to get high."
Some critics have voiced concern over the measure, arguing the synthetic marijuana may end up being sold on the black market.
HOW THE F**K THE DEA BANS FAKE WEED! K-2 & SPICE! NOT THAT I KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT! LOL! BUT THAT'S CRAZY!
