Dozens of staffers at an New Zealand hospital have been canned for sneaking peeks and circulating X-rays of a man who had a live eel stuck in his rear end.
In all, 33 workers at Auckland City Hospital were fired or disciplined for pulling up the X-ray photos and reading about the man's case when they had no reason to, New Zealand media reports.
The unnamed patient visited the hospital in September. Doctors didn't say how the slippery beast got inside him.
"The eel was about the size of a decent sprig of asparagus and the incident is the talk of the place," a hospital source said at the time, according to Britain's The Sun newspaper.
Doctors had encountered strange cases before, but an eel in the rear was a first, the source said.
The man underwent surgery to remove the creature.
Information about the incident was later leaked to the media and the incident became international news.
The punishments were the result of a six month investigation, and hospital staffers were being required to sign new confidentiality agreements.
"Now we must ensure this situation serves to highlight and build understanding of our privacy obligations to our patients," Aukland health chief Ailsa Claire said.
