IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

HERE IS 1 GOOD QUESTION! WHAT DID WE GO TO WAR FOR? WAS IT TO GET OSAMA BIN LADEN & MAKE HIM PAY FOR WHAT HE DID TO AMERICA OR WAS IT FOR GEORGE BUSH SETTLE A SCORE WITH SADDAM HUSSEIN?

WASHINGTON - Osama Bin Laden hinted Friday that he has visited Afghanistan in recent years, where U.S. air strikes might have gotten too close for comfort.
The Al Qaeda leader released yet another Internet audiotape - this time ranting at Europe ahead of elections there to pull NATO troops out of Afghanistan.

He said "intelligent" Europeans shouldn't waste their "money and sons for a gang of criminals in Washington."

Bin Laden suggested he personally witnessed air strikes on civilians since NATO's International Security Assistance Command took control of the Afghan warzone three years ago.

"It is a shameful thing for a person to be in a coalition whose supreme commander has no regard for human life and intentionally bombs villagers from the air, and I am a witness to that," Bin Laden said, according to Al Qaeda's own English translation.

NATO is the only military organization with a "supreme commander" - U.S. Adm. James Stavridis.

Evan Kohlmann, a NEFA Foundation terrorism expert, agreed Bin Laden was implying he survived a close call: "It sounds like he was in a zone getting hit by NATO air strikes."

It is impossible to verify whether Bin Laden, who is believed holed up in Pakistan, has been in Afghanistan since 2006.

"I don't think we can dismiss that possibility out of hand," said ex-CIA Pakistan station chief Robert Grenier.

But Grenier, an ERG Partners investment consultant, said Bin Laden mainly wants to appear relevant: "He's trying to place himself as someone who is on front lines and not just some reclusive figure commenting on events from afar."
