An outcry has arisen in China over a surveillance video that shows a 2-year-old girl being run over by a van - and then ignored by at least 18 people as she lay bleeding in the street.
Chinese media and the Internet community expressed outrage over the shocking video, filmed last Thursday in the city of Foshan in China's southern Guangdong Province, several outlets reported.
The video, posted on Sunday, shows the front tires of a white van running over the toddler, MSNBC reported.
The driver hesitated for a few seconds before running the girl over with the van's rear wheels.
Instead of rushing to her side and calling for help, a parade of passersby went about their business as if the girl wasn't even there, the video shows.
At least 18 passersby - some pedaling bikes, others riding in vehicles, still others walking by - failed to stop for the injured girl, MSNBC reported.
One woman picked the girl up and tossed her to the side of the street as if she were garbage, but still did not help her, the video shows.
Finally, a female trash collector pulled the girl aside and began asking people if anyone knew her, MSNBC reported. The child's mother eventually arrived to claim her, saying the girl's name is Yueyue.
The BBC reported that the girl was seriously injured.
