Embattled filmmaker Harvey Weinstein probably wishes he could re-edit these comments.
Shortly after sexual harassment allegations against Weinstein surfaced Thursday, the Miramax co-founder released a statement that included an apparent quote or lyric from JAY-Z on the rapper's recent release, "4:44."
But the quote that Weinstein used appears to be made-up, or at the very least, blatantly wrong.
"Jay Z wrote in 4:44 'I'm not the man I thought I was and I better be that man for my children.' The same is true for me. I want a second chance in the community but I know I've got work to do to earn it," Weinstein said in the statement.
There are no lyrics on JAY-Z's song "4:44" or on any of the other songs on his album of the same name that feature those words.
There's also nothing on the liner notes section of the hardcopy CD of the album, according to Spin magazine. A Google search of those words did not yield any relevant results, either.
His song "4:44" does include the lyric, "And if my children knew/ I don't even know what I would do/ If they ain't look at me the same/ I would probably die with all the shame."
Weinstein released the statement after the New York Times published a story in which actress Ashley Judd and other women accused the filmmaker of making unwanted sexual advances toward them over the course of the past three decades.
An attorney for Weinstein, Charles Holder, said in a statement that he is preparing to sue the Times, stating that the article features "false and defamatory statements."
JAY-Z and Weinstein teamed up last year on a film and TV production deal in an effort to create multiple projects together. Their first collaboration — six-part documentary series on Spike TV about Kalief Browder's tragic story — premiered this past spring.
