Hackers Access 200,000 Snapchat Accounts Including Nude Pics

Hackers accessed hundreds of thousands of private Snapchat pictures, including nude photos, which the app's users thought disappeared into the ether after being received, according to reports.

The latest breach in privacy, dubbed the Snappening, comes in the wake of the Fappening, which leaked hundreds of intimate photos of nearly 100 female celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton.

This time, however, there are far more victims — possibly reaching hundreds of thousands.

"To put this into perspective, just imagine the celebrity nude scandal. Now replace iCloud with Snapsave and blow this up by hundreds of thousands of accounts. Now you have the Snappening," wrote Kenny Withers, a social media blogger.

Hackers publicly announced the Snappening on Thursday, Business Insider reported.
Roughly half of Snapchat users are between 13 and 17, meaning that the collection likely has a large amount of child pornography, the tech site said.

Snapchat claims its servers were never breached and were not the source of the leaks.

"Snapchatters were victimized by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our Terms of Use precisely because they compromise our users' security," a company representative told Engadget, a popular tech blog.

Over the years, Snapsave, a third-party app, has been collecting every photo and video sent through the photo-messaging service, according to reports.

Hackers say they cracked the code and unlocked a 13GB library of stolen media.

But Snapsave developer Georgie Casey denies that his app was to blame.

"Our app had nothing to do with it and we've never logged username/passwords," Casey said in a statement to Engadget.

Some 4chan users said they were creating a searchable database of the stolen pics by username, but that seems more unlikely with every passing minute, according to Withers.
