It's high time for the Feds to stop traffic on Silk Road, a Website where a vast array of illegal drugs is sold, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.

Schumer called on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Justice to shut down the Internet drug-shopping site, which offers heroin, cocaine and other powerful illegal drugs for home delivery.

"E-commerce has its bad side - it can be used by criminals," Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters in his Midtown office.

Silk Road, which has been operating since February, is accessible through a computer network called TOR that keeps drug buyers' and sellers' identities anonymous, according to a report posted on Gawker last week. Instead of using credit cards or PayPal, drug purchasers make buys with a form of digital currency called Bitcoins that they anonymously obtain beforehand.

Consumer protection law gives Attorney General Eric Holder the authority to seize Silk Road's domain name, Schumer said in a letter to Holder and DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart.

Like a conventional shopping site, Silk Road even allows buyers to rate the participating drug dealers' delivery performance.

"The whole thing makes you scratch your head and wonder," Schumer said.
