“Furious 7” has just zoomed into the record books.
The film has grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office after only 17 days, Universal Pictures announced Friday.
“This is the first time in Universal’s 103-year history that we have had a film achieve this level of success in its first run,” said Ron Meyer, vice chairman of studio parent NBCUniversal, in a statement.
“It will certainly exceed this number as well as have the distinction of being the quickest of any film to reach this milestone in just 17 days.”
The Vin Diesel-Paul Walker action film now holds the record as the fastest film to cross the $1 billion mark.
“Furious 7” sped past previous record holders “The Avengers,” “Avatar,” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2,” all of which had crossed the benchmark in 19 days.
The film’s success also propelled the “Fast & Furious” franchise to earn a whopping $3.39 billion to date, according to Meyer.
As the 20th film to cross the billion-dollar threshold, “Furious 7” could potentially aim for the title of the highest-grossing film of all time.
But it would need a whole lot of box office mojo to take the crown from James Cameron’s sci-fi flick “Avatar, which has grossed $2.79 billion worldwide since its 2009 release.
