A callous suicide bomber was caught on tape bringing luggage into a Jakarta luxury hotel restaurant seconds before the device exploded - filling the screen with white smoke.
Blasts at the Ritz-Carlton and the JW Marriott Hotel killed at least nine people and wounded more than 50, including eight Americans.
The security video from the Ritz-Carlton showed the bomber striding past metal detectors pulling a roller bag and wearing a backpack across his chest, heading toward the restaurant.
The video also shows security personnel near the metal detector turning to watch the man just before the explosion sent glass and debris hurtling at guests.
Survivors fled in panic from the swank hotels into blood-smeared streets of the Indonesian capital's financial district. The bombs shattered four years without a major terrorist incident in the most populous Muslim nation.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the attackers "have no humanity and they don't care about the damage done to our country with this act of terrorism, which will have wide effects on our economy, trade, tourism and image in the eyes of the world."
President Obama condemned the bombings and offered Indonesia help in the recovery effort.
"I strongly condemn the attacks that occurred this morning in Jakarta and extend my deepest condolences to all of the victims and their loved ones," Obama said.
Officials said the two attackers checked into Room 1808 in the Marriott on Wednesday.
Police said one blast hit the basement of the Marriott and a second the restaurant of the Ritz-Carlton. An unexploded bomb was later found in Room 1808, which served as a "control center" and contained explosive chemicals and bomb-making materials.
Executives from American and other Western companies were holding a regular Friday morning meeting near the Marriott restaurant, and were among the wounded.
Officials said seven people were killed at the Marriott and two at the Ritz-Carlton.
"Based on the evidence at the scene, we found that there were two suicide bombers," national police chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri said.
An NYPD lieutenant assigned as an overseas liaison in Indonesia was inside the Marriott within six hours of the attack and was briefed by Indonesian officials.
Scores of marked NYPD "critical response vehicles" were deployed by the Counterterrorism Bureau to Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and dozens of other city hotels.
"There's no information of a similar threat to New York, but it's our standard practice now to take such precautions and to brief security directors in New York of what we learn," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
