Don’t let the makeup fool you: The feds say these guys aren’t just clowning around.
The face-painting Juggalos — hardcore fans of the hardcore hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse — were identified as a potentially dangerous gang in a new FBI “Threat Assessment Report.”
The music fans, who sport the same bizarre black and white greasepaint as their musical heroes, were lumped in with the Latin Kings, Crips and Gangster Disciples as “criminal threats.”
“The Juggalos, a loosely organized hybrid gang, are rapidly expanding into many US communities,” according to the FBI report.
“Although recognized as a gang in only four states, many Juggalos subsets exhibit gang-like behavior and engage in criminal activity and violence.”
The report indicates that the most prevalent Juggalo crimes are simple assault, personal drug use and possession, petty theft and vandalism.
The report also included a picture of a Juggalo in full clown-faced makeup pointing a pistol at the camera. And its cites a January 2010 incident where two Juggalos were accused of beating and robbing a homeless man
The Juggalos responded by insisting they were no more threatening that your typical Deadhead.
“This is unfair!” wrote one Juggalo in an internet post urging his pals to sign a petition. “The Juggalo lifestyle has saved more lives than it hasn’t! Let’s see you gangsters say that!”
More than 400 fans of the band signed the online petition urging the FBI to drop their status as gangbangers.
An e-mail sent to the band Wednesday for comment was not immediately returned.
