Following Fantasia Barrino's recent hospitalization for a failed suicide attempt, the former "American Idol" winner's father has spoken out about the harrowing ordeal. "She's doing fine," Joseph Barrino told RadarOnline.com, from his home in Greensboro, N.C.
The 26-year-old singing sensation was rushed to Mercy South Hospital in Pineville, N.C., Monday night after swallowing aspirin and a sleep aid, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department report posted on Radar. The report classified the incident as a "suicide."
According to Barrino's manager, Brian Dickens, the singer was "dehydrated and exhausted at the time" and has injuries that are not life-threatening.
"Fantasia is stable now. She will be released from the hospital soon," Dickens told UsMagazine.com. "Fantasia is a fighter and a survivor. This is not the hardest thing Fantasia has endured. Fantasia will be stronger, smarter, and better for it. Her work has always inspired her and served as a source of strength."
The hospitalization came one day after the Season 3 "Idol" champ denied that she came between Antwaun Cook, a married man she met at a T-Mobile store, and his wife.
Cook's wife, Paula, filed for divorce last week, claiming Barrino and her husband had engaged in a "covert adulterous affair" - and made multiple sex tapes together.
Dickens did not address rumors about the sex tapes, however he did acknowledge that Barrino, who is a single mom, had a relationship with Cook for about 11 months.
"Fantasia believed Mr. Cook when he told her he was not happy in his marriage and his heart was not in it," Dickens said in a statement. "Fantasia fell in love with Mr. Cook and believed that he loved her.
"She knows some of the allegations in Mrs. Cook's complaint are totally false," he added.
"Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused," Dickens said. "She was totally overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention."
