IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

Everyone's heard of Persians and poodles, but a pet show in Manhattan this weekend will also showcase some of the more obscure breeds - like a cat that resembles an owl and a dog that looks like a teddy bear.
The "Meet the Breeds" extravaganza at the Javits Center aims to introduce the public to the cats and dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club and the Cat Fanciers' Association.

"Everybody loves cats and dogs, and people are fascinated by various breeds," said Allene Tartaglia, executive director of the Cat Fanciers' Association.

"It's a good opportunity for people to see what breed is best for their family."

At a preview yesterday, the Sphynx was on display - a feline that's not exactly warm and fuzzy.

With just 1/32nd of an inch of fur, the breed is best known for appearing as Dr. Evil's pet in the "Austin Powers" movies.

Sphynx owner John Gardiner said the reactions he gets to his 2-year-old, Scarlet O'Hairless, are mixed.

"They're anywhere from shocked and scared to very amazed," he said. "It seems as if they are an acquired taste."

Other breeds that the average New Yorker might not know about include the Exotic - often called the "lazy's man's Persian" because its sleek coat needs much less maintenance.
