IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

Dutch scientists are on a quest to create the first-ever hamburger made entirely from lab-grown meat.

Project leader Mark Post, a physiologist at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, said that an anonymous investor put up $330,000 to back the state-of-the-art burger, which will be made from bovine stem cells grown in a petri dish.

Michelin-starred experimental chef Heston Blumenthal — who owns The Fat Duck in England and is known for dishing up such gonzo grub as snail porridge and bacon and egg ice cream — has signed on to grill the petri patty for a special guest taster in October.

Post said the ultimate goal is to mass produce the lab meat in order to cut back on cattle slaughtering and the global warming effects produced by livestock farming.

U.N. numbers show animal farming takes up to 30% of the earth's land, and demand for meat is expected to double over the next four decades, MSNBC reported.

"You can easily calculate that we need alternatives," Post told The Guardian. "If you don't do anything meat will become a luxury food and be very, very expensive."

So far, Post and his team have managed to culture a few thin strips of pinkish cow muscle measuring about an inch long and a half a millimeter thick.

He'll need to grow a couple thousand more strands before they are ready to be mixed with lab-grown animal fat and then pressed into a golf-ball sized slider.

Don't expect to find the test-tube burgers on the menu at your local hangout just yet. The Dutch team estimated that mass production would take another 10 to 20 years.

Post predicts the experiment is opening the door to a new premium product that could be sold on shelves next to free-range organic chickens and grass-fed beef.

Lab-grown meat also means that more exotic options are on the table.

"We could make panda meat, I'm sure we could," Post told The Guardian.

The only way i'm eating that sh!t is if I'm stuck on a spaceship for months! Or all the animals on earth died like the dinosaurs! I Ain't Eatin' No Test Tube Meat! Ok! I know that didn't sound right! But i aint eatin' it
